Spiderman Pushup – Exercise of the Week

13 Jun 2019

You have probably heard of the pushup exercise, but have you heard of the variation known as the spiderman pushup? Like the name suggests, it incorporates a different movement that mimics how spiders (and of course spiderman) can crawl and contort their body in certain ways. While mainly a chest / upper body exercise, this variation is more challenging overall – especially for your abdominal muscles and core area.

Spiderman Pushup

To begin, assume a standard pushup position. This entails of lying on the ground with your hands on the floor with arms stretched out just in front of the shoulders and your feet being supported by your toes. Your body should form a straight line – making sure that your hips and midsection do not sag or dip. As you go to lower your body towards the ground to complete one repetition (rep); raise your left leg off the floor and bend your left knee up towards your elbow and chest area. Push back then to the straight starting position.

On your next rep, raise your right leg off the floor and bend your right knee up towards your elbow and chest area instead. Repeat this rhythm and movement at each rep – swapping from the left to the right side and back again. You may feel it during the motion of the movement, but the crawling effect can be observed by others (especially from the side) when you are completing this exercise. For all the superhero fans out there, this is the movement that spiderman would make when scaling high-rise buildings!

As with any exercise and movement that may be new to you, please ask any of our friendly fitness team if you require any help to complete the spiderman pushup properly. They are more than happy to demonstrate any exercise for you and guide you through it to help you reach and maintain your health and fitness goals.
