Make Your Own Electrolyte Drink – Recipe of the Week

27 Jul 2019

You may have heard of electrolytes as they are featured in many sports and energy drinks. But did you know that you can make your own electrolyte drink? Electrolytes are important to regulate the balance of fluid in our bodies – especially at times when our body is more physically exerted like when exercising or even when sick / fighting illness. So rather than choosing a sports or energy drink packed with added sugars and chemicals, here is how to make a healthy homemade version.

Recipe Ingredients List
• Still Water (500ml)
• Lemon (one)
• Lime (one)
• Sea Salt / Pink Himalayan Salt
• Pure Maple Syrup (optional)

Step 1
Make sure that the still water is cold and add this to a jug (you can also add some ice cubes if you like). You can choose to use either tap or bottled water here. Squeeze some fresh lemon juice and fresh lime juice into this jug along with a small pinch of either genuine sea salt or pink Himalayan salt. In terms of a ‘pinch’ measurement here, this should be a very small amount (even less than a quarter of a teaspoon).

Step 2
Mix all of these ingredients together in the jug using a spoon or whisk. When ready, pour it into a bottle and your homemade electrolyte drink is made and ready to enjoy! Note that you can add more fresh lemon and / or lime juice if you like to achieve a certain taste. Note too that if you still find the taste too bitter that you can add a dash of pure maple syrup to add some natural sweetness.

Surprised at how simple this is to make? The electrolytes themselves are molecules of certain elements that have an electrical charge and what are known as ions – in this case the sodium from the salt. They work to help power our nervous system and need to be replenished when exercising or when sick / fighting off an illness. Knowing this, you can make your own electrolyte drink as and when you need it with simple ingredients that you are sure to have at home!
