Family Rig


What is it?

Family Rig is a functional based class carried out in the rig area on the gym floor. The main goal is to get both children and their parents involved in the same class – making the intensities suitable for everyone. The rig is designed with the purpose of improving all areas of fitness including cardiovascular, strength, flexibility, co-ordination and agility. The rig can be broken up into different sections with numerous exercises performed at different stations in the class; all in a safe and controlled manner under the watchful eye of the class instructor.

The rig area itself contains a wide range of training equipment from TRX straps, prowlers and battle ropes to name a few. The majority of exercises will be well suited to the younger members of the class with a quick alteration so that the parents can hit those intensity levels too.

We carefully choose the exercises performed to make the class flow in a fluent and beneficial manner for each individual. The biggest benefit of the rig is that of the many adaptations we can make to suit each member of the class. As such, there is always a progression and a regression on hand if ever needed.

Each parent and child is sure to get the best out of themselves in the Family Rig class at the same time making their session fun and effective. Each class will start with a warm up containing some cardio based movements to get the heart rate up in preparation for the class ahead. The instructor will also demonstrate each and every exercise, station or movement to be carried out within the rig.

Class Structure

The class will then begin and the structure of the class will vary depending on the instructor teaching it that day. For example in most cases the rig will be a full body session so the instructor may set up the stations in an order that performs upper and then lower body parts – or push and pull actions so the worked body part can have an active recovery on each alternating station. Usually in the Family Rig class, the parent and child will work side by side as a team. The main phase of the class could last between thirty to forty minutes before heading into the cool down. This period will include some static stretching to finish off the session.

Who is it for?

This class is suitable for children aged between 8-14 years of age. They must be accompanied by an adult who will also participate in the class and both the child and adult must be members of Westpark Fitness.
