What do I need to bring with me when I join up?

Proof of identity (driver's license or passport will also do), and proof of banking details. This can be either a copy of a cancelled cheque, a bank statement or an electronic pay slip. If you are a corporate member, please bring proof of your corporate identity.

What should I bring along to the club?

Remember to bring your membership card, a small sweat towel and a water bottle. Filtered water is available at the club, so you can bring an empty water bottle and fill it up at one of the water fountains. If you are a swimmer, remember to bring your swimming cap.

What do I wear?

Although you should be comfortable (wear light, breathable clothes that have been designed for physical activity and that you can move in), do have respect for your fellow gym-goers - guys, we don't want to stare at your naked chests, so wear a T-shirt. Wear only closed shoes such as cross-trainers or running shoes. You may want to also bring a top to keep you warm when you leave the gym.

Will someone help me to get started when I get there?

Absolutely. All members go through an optional assessment which involves a 60-minute consultation with a fitness professional to get you started.

Is the pool water safe and is the water hot or cold?

All our swimming pools are sanitized with chlorine. The chemical levels are tightly managed and recorded daily. All our pools are heated.

I like to listen to music while I'm exercising. Are there any audio facilities?

We play music in the gym. You can also follow the news on the television while using some of the cardio equipment by plugging your earphones into the cardio theatre facility. Headphones can be purchased at reception if needed

Why is there a 20-minute time limit on some of the cardio machines?

Due to their popularity, some cardio machines such as treadmills have a time limit of 20 minutes during peak hours to allow us to cater fairly to all members. However, if you wish to do cardio for more than 20 minutes you are free to move consecutively to the next available machine for a further 20-minute session.

I have never done group exercise before. Can I simply join in?

A firm favourite among our existing members, we have no doubt that you will love our group exercise classes. So simply grab your trainers and a sweat towel, dress comfortably so you can move, and make your way to a class of your choice. Get a timetable from reception or view online. Some classes are suitable for advanced members only; this will be indicated on the timetables. Look out for beginners' classes that will help to familiarise you with a specific type of exercise.

Do I have to book for classes?

The only class you need to book in for is our spinning class. This is done outside the spinning studio itself.

Some of the classes look like fun, but my coordination and balance are rubbish.

Some classes involve dance moves and require a little more coordination than others, but that doesn't mean they're out of bounds if you're all thumbs. Our fitness instructors will guide you through specific techniques. Rather than fretting about whether you can pull off dance moves or high kicks while keeping your ego intact, rather focus on what you enjoy. Try different classes until you find one that works for you.

Which classes will help me to lose weight?

Group exercise classes are excellent for weight loss, because they generally require a lot of energy and tend to burn lots of calories. Without getting too scientific, a good rule of thumb is to do classes and exercises that get your heart rate up for at least 30 minutes per session, at least three times a week. What's more, attending classes where the focus is on toning as well as cardio will improve shape and build muscle, which can help to rev up your metabolism. See you in the clubs!
